The two plots in John Dryden's 'The Spanish Friar; Or, The Double Discovery' are unified through Dryden's use of the biblical typology of the Exodus. Some scholars believe the play is disjointed because it contains one serious and one comic plot, but each plot complements the other and strengthens the hero. The Moses Exodus story reflects Dryden's purpose of involving God in the story. Dryden himself had commented on his design of unifying the serious and comic parts of this play.
