Apr. 12--Ely M. Liebow, who taught literature at Northeastern Illinois University for more than 40 years, was a Sherlock Holmes scholar who wrote a groundbreaking biography about the Scottish surgeon on whom the fictional sleuth was based. Mr. Liebow, 82, died Friday, March 30, in Brentwood North Healthcare Center in Riverwoods after a two-year bout with pancreatic cancer, said his wife, Phoebe.
