SHERLOCK HOLMES' creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle famously fought to free an alleged killer convicted in one of Scotland's most notorious miscarriages of justice.
But newly-revealed letters have exposed a furious fall-out between Sir Arthur and wrongly-convicted Oscar Slater.
The intervention of the top detective writer won freedom and an official pardon for gambler Slater.
The German, living in Glasgow, was convicted of bludgeoning wealthy pensioner Marion Gilchrist, 82, to death in her home in December 1908.
