Not only does the dart-shooting blowgun have ancient roots and modern uses ["An Ancient Weapon's Modern Sting," front page, July 20], it also possesses literary fame.
One of Sherlock Holmes's major cases, recounted in "The Sign of Four" by Arthur Conan Doyle, features poisoned darts shot from a blowpipe by an Andaman Islander. Holmes himself narrowly escapes death from a whizzing dart during a wild Thames River boat chase for the criminals.
