A DECADE-LONG campaign for the village where Arthur Conan Doyle grew up to be given special conservation status has failed due to a glut of home extensions.
Nether Liberton, the childhood home of the Sherlock Holmes author, can trace its history back to the 12th century.
But planning chiefs have refused to give it special conservation status because they say residents' work on their homes has damaged the area's character. They also say new developments and the Cameron Toll shopping centre have robbed the village of much of its original charm.
