Funding crisis hits revamp bid for Conan Doyle's home

THE proposed transformation of Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's childhood home is under threat.

Developers want to turn the 18th-century derelict Liberton Bank House into a special school and build a GPs' practice in the former gardens of the C-listed building beside Cameron Toll Shopping Centre.

As well as safeguarding the future of the property, the scheme will also provide a permanent base for Dunedin Special School, which must find a new home. But critical funding from health chiefs for the project has been delayed while Dunedin has already been given its marching orders ...
