LONDON (AP) - It was a mystery worthy of Sherlock Holmes himself.

More than 40 years ago, private papers and personal artifacts that belonged to the fictional sleuth's creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, were reportedly spirited away during a family dispute over the author's estate.

In the intervening years, many scholars began to doubt the existence of the manuscripts and sketches by the physician who created one of fiction's best-loved characters. Others feared they had been destroyed.
