Don't expect Club Med to open in Omsk, Russia, anytime soon - or ever. The Lonely Planet guidebook terms this drab industrial city of 1.3 million people in the endless expanse of Siberia "a resoundingly ordinary place." Closed to outsiders until 1992, it was a major dumping ground for exiles, most famously writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, who barely survived a four-year sentence there.

But Michael Connor can't get enough of the gray, grim place.
