Nikolai Gogol (1809-'52), the Russian bureaucrat and teacher turned writer noted for social realism, black comedy and playfulness of language, is best known for the novel "Dead Souls" and the short story "The Overcoat."
Mira Nair's new film "The Namesake," based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri, is about the adventures of a young Bengali-American and his thorny relationship with his father, who named him Gogol in tribute to the writer and his work, to which he has a special kinship.
