Miguel de Cervantes' 17th-century tale of the adventures of an ageing, mildly unhinged knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, scored well ahead of Shakespeare's plays and epics by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Homer and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
