I first arrived in Leningrad 12 years ago and dashed right off in search of the spirit of old St. Petersburg. The search ended unsuccessfully, at a concert of Peter Tchaikovsky in the Kirov Opera. At 18, I was not yet an opera lover, got bored and wound up in a basement jazz club in the company of a motley group of locals.
On my next visit I tried the frontal approach. With a map and a copy of Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" in hand, I set out for the tavern where Raskolnikov, the 19th-century novel's protagonist, went drinking.
