THE 848 letters in this volume, one-third of them previously unpublished, were written when Lawrence was in his late thirties. During this period he traveled from Sicily to Ceylon, on to Australia and the South Pacific, to California, New Mexico, old Mexico, and New York, back to California and Mexico, then across the Atlantic to England, Germany, and France, and back again to New York.

The publication of his complete correspondence of this period, down to the last postcard and telegram, inevitably results in a great deal of repetition. ...
