MY THEME is from Joseph Conrad and his tale The Shadow Line: "Only the young," he wrote, "have such moments. One closes behind one the little gate of mere boyishness--and enters the enchanted garden. One goes on. And time, too, goes on--till one perceives ahead a shadow-line warning one that the region of early youth, too, must be left behind."

On this side of the shadow line is shimmering sunshine, endless possibilities, experiment, enjoyment and heartbreak. The enchanted garden of youth. On the other side of the shadow line is maturity. Summer leads on to winter. Sunshine ...
