The Rainbow is the story of three generations of the Brangwen family, a
family of farmers which has held the Marsh Farm, on the Derbyshire -
Nottinghamshire borders, from - it seems - time immemorial. The first Brangwen
Lawrence deals with is Tom Brangwen, whom we meet when he is still in his
twenties. At the beginning of the novel, he is lonely, sexually frustrated and
