Chapter Four: The Young Life Of Paul

Now Lawrence narrows the focus of the story even more; he is finally
concentrating his attention on Paul, who is, after all, to be the protagonist
of the novel. As a child, Paul is pale and quiet, "with eyes that seemed to
listen. . . . As a rule, he seemed old for his years." He is extremely
sensitive to other people's feelings, especially his mother's. When she frets,
he understands, and can have no peace. Among the children, his earliest friend
