Chapter One: The Early Married Life Of The Morels
Sons and Lovers opens with a description of The Bottoms, a meagre
residential development built for the workers' families by the mining company
of Carston, Waite & Co. in the great grimy coal and iron field of
Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The Bottoms consists of "six blocks of miners'
dwellings, two rows of three, like the dots on a blank - six domino, and
