THE world's first eco-tourist, known to most people as Robinson Crusoe, certainly left his mark on Tobago.
He might have been a fictional character but the paradise he discovered was real enough.
The hero of Daniel Defoe's 18th-century novel was based on the real-life experiences of one Alexander Selkirk.
Selkirk ran away to sea in 1704 and asked to be left on an uninhabited island and rescued five years later. He built a house and lived in harmony with nature - and Tobagonians insist the island in question was theirs.
