Daniel Defoe's 'Roxana' portrays the pathetic character of a protagonist who cannot break free of a past characterized by sin, error and crime. Since Roxana cannot abandon her tragic past, she cannot attain peace and repentance. Defoe's novel tries to impart to its readers that formation and destruction of the self is not circumstantial. Contemplation about one's self and talking to others are the best ways to enrich the lives of individuals, according to Defoe.

Readers of Defoe's Roxana tend to see it as different, in degree if not in kind, from the author's other works of prose fiction. ...
