May 14--Charleston pirate Gary Dow drinks rum, owns a parrot and knows Daniel Defoe books by heart, but he still thinks "Arrr" is a cliche.

"It's too Hollywood," he said.

Dow, a pirate aficionado, aims to share the pirate allure with Charlestonians who walk the same streets Blackbeard and other famous sea raiders stormed through three centuries ago.

This weekend, about 50 pirates from across the Southeast will be scattered throughout downtown Charleston dressed in pirate garb and speaking as buccaneers did for the Charleston Maritime Festival. ...
