Director takes risks to film new `Crusoe'

Caleb Deschanel almost died while directing "Crusoe," his revision of Daniel Defoe's 18th century novel about a shipwreck survivor on a desert island.

"I just hope it finds a receptive audience," the filmmaker said. "It was a really hard movie to make. We spent weeks on location on the island of La Digue. And I practically got killed . . . by stepping on a stonefish.

"That's a poisonous fish," Deschanel added. "It's got a venom similar to a cobra, and it's very painful. It's got a thin dorsal fin that's hollow, and if you step on it, it injects this poison into you.
