The worst storm on record. The author Daniel Defoe said men were lifted off their feet and carried for yards. Some 8,000 sailors drowned and 100 churches lost their roofs.

Known as the Great Storm, it killed 307 people in eastern England and hundreds more in Holland when coastal defences were breached, causing massive flooding.

The so-called Hurricane killed 19 people, uprooted 15 million trees and caused pounds 1bn damage. High winds hit the country in the early hours with gusts in East Anglia reaching120mph.
