ON 26 DECEMBER, 1706, the issue of the Equivalent was raised again in the Scottish Parliament, in particular the second clause which, as related by Daniel Defoe, stated: "...after the Union, Scotland becoming liable to the same Customes and Duties payable on import and export, and to the same excises on all exciseable liquors as in England, as well ... as upon the account of the encrase of trade and people, (which will be the happy consequence of the Union) the said revenues will much improve beyond the before mentioned annual values thereof, of which no present estimate can be made; yet ...
