IN HIS letter of 19 November to his spymaster, Robert Harley, Daniel Defoe was able to report that the third article proposing a single parliament for the whole of Britain had been passed - but his letter also informed Harley that the level of violence in the country was escalating:
I have the satisfaction to write to your honr that the parliamt has now voted the third article by a majority of 30.
