Robinson Crusoe: Chapters 39 - 44
Chapter Thirty-Nine
After two or three days, the men return to Crusoe's castle. Crusoe
teaches Friday everything proper to make him useful and helpful, particularly
how to speak. Friday is an apt scholar; he is also particularly merry as well
as being constantly diligent. Crusoe explains to him the use of salt with meat
and how to retrieve animals that he shoots. Friday thinks Crusoe's gun is a
magical person; he speaks to it, and asks the gun not to shoot him.
