Bailiff:

In Defoe's time, an officer of the law who served warrants, made arrests
and took charge of prisoners.

Clown:

Defoe means by this word a country fellow, a simple peasant, not the
circus variety of clown.

Composition (For Debt):

To make a composition for debt in bankruptcy is to agree to pay one's
creditors a percentage of what they are owed, such as twenty-five cents in the
dollar.

Constables at this time were not full-time policemen, but part-time ones
