The poem on the Jabberwock in Lewis Carroll's book 'Through the Looking Glass' is an adventure in word recognition. The words used were actually combinations of two separate words providing a single, fused meaning. The readers' uncertainties concerning the odd words at first encounter in the opening stanzas reflect the boy protagonist's fears of the unknown monsters he would be meeting. Just as the boy defeated his anxieties and comes home triumphant, the readers feel relief akin to homecoming at the poem's end when they re-encounter the words of the opening stanza.
