A M. Homes's The End of Alice takes a Lewis Carroll quote for its epigraph, "A stopped clock is right twice a day." It's an apt introduction to the narrator, a pedophile and murderer caught red-handed in 1971, locked away for some 23 years--a man for whom time has stopped, and whose perceptions we might well assume to be impaired. Except that he's right, some of the time.
