ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND by Lewis Carroll. Macmillan, 196pp, $27.95. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, written as everyone knows, by an Oxford clergyman and mathematician, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, to entertain the daughter of friends, was published in 1866 and has never been out of print since. It is one of a small group of childhood classics, and quotations from it, as children's author Philip Pullman notes in his introduction to this edition, have become as familiar as quotations from Hamlet: "Curiouser and curiouser", "What is the use of a book without pictures or conversations?" ...
