Lucy Snowe's concerns about surveillance in Charlotte Bronte's 'Villette' highlight the novel's thematic preoccupation with looking. The novel equates seeing with knowledge and knowledge to power. Close observation becomes a prerequisite for reform. Through Lucy Snowe, Bronte distorts conventional frames of perceiving reality and offers readers new glimpses. The traditionaL binary opposition in the conclusion of 'Villette' appears to undercut Bronte's purpose. However, the character of Lucy marks Bronte's success in challenging the male gaze and notions of literary realism.
