Dear Editor: Your article on Charlotte Bronte quoted Professor Caroline Levine as saying that Bronte "was the first woman writer ever to have a biography written about her while she was still living."
I'm afraid Elizabeth Gaskell's biography of Charlotte came after her death, prompted by Charlotte's best friend, Ellen Nussey, who thought she was being maligned by the media. I'm sure this was just a misunderstanding on someone's part, but I do think it important enough to correct the record.
