Chapter 28

After two days' travel the coachman set Jane down at a crossroads near
the village of Morton (identified as Hethersage in Derbyshire). In her
disturbed state she forgot her parcel and so had no bread or extra clothes.
She lay on the heath that night, feeling that Nature at least had not cast her
off. Her heart still trembling for Mr. Rochester, Jane rose to her knees to
