Chapter 10

The epidemic drew attention to the bad conditions at Lowood. Public
opinion was aroused and Mr. Brocklehurst was obliged to give up some of his
authority. Things improved; the school became "a truly useful and noble
institution," and Jane spent eight happy years there, the last two as a
teacher. But after Miss Temple left to be married, Jane felt unsettled and
restless. Looking from her window at the blue hills and the winding road, she
realized that there was a great world beyond and longed to explore it, "to
