Chapter 1

Jane Eyre tells her own story as she remembers it. At the beginning of
the book she was a ten-year-old orphan living with her relatives, the Reeds,
as a dependent. The Reeds, landowning gentry in the north of England, were
comfortably off. Mrs. Reed, a widow, spoiled her three children, Eliza,
Georgiana, and John. John, now fourteen, had become particularly obnoxious, a
fat, greedy, unwholesome bully. However, in his mother's eyes he could do no
