May 15--As an 8th grader roaming the halls at Bret Harte Elementary School in Hyde Park during the 1940s, Robert Friend campaigned for class president on the slogan: "Bob Friend is the people's Friend, a Friend to all."

He was elected.

And so began the fun-loving Chicagoan's lifelong pursuit to ensure the family name fit, his daughter said.
