Murals, art outlet give students school spirit

HAYWARD -- Bret Harte Middle School, like many of its counterparts, is a campus of courtyards with gray and blue walls.

Tidy but lacking color, the walls now have been brightened through local artist Suzanne Gayle's murals.

As Principal Lisa Davies pointed out, "The students are here many hours a day, and so we would like them to feel as comfortable as possible so they can learn."

Gayle and Davies have worked together closely so that the walls reflect a middle school theme. Gayle has painted two murals thatincorporate students' designs as well as their handprints -- made during August ...
