Bret Harte honors boy who drowned

OAKLAND -- Eighth-graders from Bret Harte Middle School ended their year on a positive note -- they celebrated their promotion to high school and honored the memory of a beloved classmate, Rudy Rodriguez Jr.

Several hundred family members, friends and community members filled the Scottish Rite Temple in Oakland Tuesday morning to commemorate the Class of 2007: 290 eighth-grade students who will attend area high schools in the fall. Forty-five minutes into the ceremony, nearly every seat was occupied: some parents beaming, some crying, others earnestly fixated with video cameras.
