OAKLAND -- They asked whether the eighth-graders were given pool safety instructions, whether they returned to the swimming area too soon after lunch, and how many adult chaperones were near the water when Rudy Rodriguez Jr. started to drown.

Some wondered why children had to wait days to receive grief counseling after Rudy was rushed to the hospital from a class picnic last week. Others shared ideas about how they could help the family, or how to detect signs of stress and depression in their own children.
