HAYWARD -- Middle school might not be an easy time for kids -- or their teachers, who have just two years to work with them before the beginning of high school.
But Hayward's five middle schools -- Bret Harte, Chavez, King, Ochoa and Winton -- showed improvement in their high-stakes test scores. And a report released Thursday showed that all of the major ethnic and socioeconomic "subgroups" of students at each of those schools improved significantly.
