Russell, Annie
(1864–1936), English-born American actress, particularly effective in ingénue roles. She was on the stage as a child, and in 1881 appeared with immense success in New York in the title-role of Esmeralda , written by William Gillette in collaboration with Frances Hodgson Burnett. In 1891 she was forced to retire through illness, but in 1894 she returned and was seen in a number of new plays, among them Bret Harte's Sue , in which she was seen in London for the first time in 1898.
