The artist, mystic, and poet william Blake was born in 1757 in central London, the son of a tradesman. By the age of ten his artistic gifts were sufficiently recognized that he was sent to a drawing school, and in 1772 he began a seven-year apprenticeship with James Basire, an engraver. He then enrolled in the Royal Academy where he had an uneasy relationship with its president Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Throughout his life he wrote poems, which he also illustrated. Many were on religious or philosophical subjects, and verses from one--Jerusalem--were later set to music by Sir C. ...
