FOR 165 years, they were lost to the art world - until their chance discovery in a second-hand bookshop in Scotland.

Now the cache of watercolours by English artist William Blake has sold at auction in America for almost [pounds sterling]4million.

The stunning collection of pen and ink pictures, dating from 1805, fell into obscurity in 1836 when it was sold for a paltry 25 shillings.

Sotheby's had hoped to sell all 19 works in New York this week, but only 11 found buyers.

The auctioneer concluded there were simply too many for the market ...
