It won't have escaped you that this year we're commemorating the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade, nor that the occasion has (quite rightly) become contentious. What promised to be a feast of moral self-congratulation has raised bitter and indigestible questions all round, about historical evil and responsibility, power and victimhood, memory, lasting damage, repentance, amends. It's proving to be a very productive bicentenary.
