BELIEVE it or not, some people didn't think Geraldine McEwan was the right choice to play Miss Marple.

"Too tough," or "not vulnerable enough," they said.

Oh, how they've been forced to eat their words since then.

Ms McEwan has proved to be a formidable, twin-setted presence in the series, and when she bows out soon, she'll be a great loss. The latest instalment in the series, based on Agatha Christie's novel Towards Zero, is her penultimate case, with Nemesis to come later in the year.

One person who couldn't wait to star alongside her is Tom Baker.
