Worshippers at a church once attended by mystery writer Agatha Christie were forced to turn detective after roof tiles began disappearing in a series of suspected thefts.

In a move that would make Miss Marple take note, churchgoers took part in a series of all-night stakeouts in a bid to hunt down suspects.

All Saints Church in Torquay, where "Queen of Crime" Agatha Christie worshipped for 50 years, was targeted in a series of raids. In just three days, pounds20,000 of lead was stripped from the roof.
