To walk around the famous gardens of Greenway, in the tuckedaway village of Galmpton, near Brixham, Devon, is to meander through mystery and enchantment.

Multi-layered with lush, semitropical plantings, the gardens seem almost wild.

Visitors are led via gravelled paths down to the Dart Estuary. This is where the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie, retreated for holidays after she bought Greenway with her architect husband, Max Mallowan, in 1938.

She described it as 'my dream house and garden'.
