L'Īle des Pingouins

(1908)

A satirisation of events in France's history and the human condition by portraying them as baptised penguins.

I first read this delightful satire some time ago, about the age of 14, and the premise struck me as a perfect antidote to any of the missionary zeal that lingered in my soul from the upbringing I had received from my family. That premise, as I remember it, is the basic premise of all anthropomorphic literary treatment of animals and their relation to man:that the lower animals are either better at living than humans are and we should learn morality from them; or visa-verse. I;ll leave it to the reader to find out which premise France satirizes here.--Submitted by Thomas Rowland.
