One has to laugh before being happy, because otherwise one risks to die before having laughed.

"Je crains [...] que l'âme ne se vide à ces passe-temps vains, et que le fin du fin ne soit la fin des fins." (Edmond Rostand, Cyrano de Bergerac, Acte III, Scène VII)

    Happy Birthday!

One cannot have too many paddles!

    An interview with The Comedian:

*Why are we doing this interview thing?*
For my annual 15 minutes of LitNet fame.

*Are you sure you want to do this?*
    Yep.

    *So, how old are you?*
    Still 30ish.

*If you had a personal theme song what would it be?*
A lot of good choices here. I thought of "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys" by Waylon and Willie. . .but no. Then I thought of "Change" by Blind Melon. . . .but no. Then I found it. Here's my personal theme song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIntrayvOlc

*Are you male or female? *
    Male

*What makes you keep coming back?*
The conversations, the people, the wit-ful and witless banter. Even the familiar arguments that I complain about, I sort of like those too. One thing that I particularly enjoy are the blogs, both reading and writing them.

*Are you happy with the way things are here?* Yes.

Should JBI get an + beside his name?
Only if I can get a little blood stained smiley face next to mine.

    *Which countries have you visited?*
England, Canada, Mexico, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Mexico

*How do you like your home town?*
Yeah. It's small, cold, and rural. But our woods and waters are large and the people are good (mostly) and tough. I like that.

*If you could live somewhere different, where would it be and why?*
Honestly, I could be happy living just about anywhere insofar as I could see the stars at night, breath air that doesn't smell like piss and diesel fumes. . . . where the trees are taller than most the buildings, where I can easily go fishing & X-country skiing, where I don't have to lock my car when go to the store. . .you get the idea.

    *Do you have any pets?*
Some fish: coi and goldfish to be exact -- they're cheap and I don't have use/pay for a heater to heat the water in the tank. By the way, when these fish die, I think I'm going to use my minnow seine to fill the tank with some local pices

    *What makes you happy?*
Lots of things make me happy. Playin' cards with my two girls, catchin' bluegills at the boat landing, drinkin' a cold beer after work, kissin' my wife. . . .the quiet ski trail through the mid-winter woods, a bowl of popcorn & a book, a fourth of July evening on the beach. . . . Hell, even tiny domestic things make me happy: emptyin' the dishwasher every morning, waterin' my orchids, cookin' dinner on a Tuesday evening, goin' to work,

*Would you choose a desperate Hope or an unknown Faith?* an unknown faith . . . . easy. I'll pass on anything that's "desperate".

*Do you feel comfortable in your walk with God/atheism? * Sometimes. Sometimes not.

    Who is your favourite Beatle?
Well, I've always liked a good dung beetle. A bright shiny little nothin' makin' a little ball of **** to roll home. . . .sometimes I think that there ain't no better metaphor for life. Here's an image, in case you needed one:

    http://www.lw5.co.uk/Pictures/Dung%20beetles.JPG

*Given the option, what animal would you choose to be?*
Well, I'm on a roll (ha!) so I'm going with dung beetle here.

*What makes you feel great about yourself?*
Oh, friends and family and all that. I'm also a competitive sort, so, really. . . I feel really great when I win and when you lose. . .just sayin'

*How did you meet your significant other?*
    In graduate school.

    *Who inspires you most?*
My kids -- I know it's a blase answer, but it's true. And who inspires me second most? Henry David Thoreau. In fact, I have a tee shirt with Thoreau's picture on it and the question "What Would Thoreau Do?" -- pure wisdom baby!

*What are you naturally good at? (Skills, abilities, gifts etc.)*
You know, this question sort of pisses me off. I hate the idea that we're naturally good at anything. So, like everyone else here, I imagine, I'm not naturally good at anything. The stuff I'm good at -- like writin' gerunds and present participles without the "g" is somethin' that I've worked at. I'm also good at fishin', but I worked at that too. I'm not a bad reader and carpenter either, but I worked hard to be good at those too.

*What is the one thing you must do before you die?*
Not really sure. . . how about read Pride and Prejudice. I'm sure that'd nearly kill me.

*If you had to teach something, what would you teach?* I'd be a canoeing instructor.

*What would you regret not fully doing, being or having in your life?* Wow. I honestly don't know. Maybe my life-accomplishments are small, but I'm pert-near fine.

*Do you have a tasty recipe for life that you could share for a reasonable price? … Is it REALLY tasty?* Sure do. It'll cost ya just 1 issue of Action Comics #1. But the recipe is so worth it!

*What method do you cherish above all others, as means to improving your life?* Humm. . .I wouldn't really call it a "method" -- well, maybe it is -- maybe we can call it The Comedian's method. (I like the sound of that!). But here it is -- Step 1: take responsibility for your faults and praise others for your accomplishments. Step 2: exercise everyday. Step 3 pick up a hobby (and no, playing video games is not a hobby. But creating one is. "Who says?" you ask. "I say," I say. ) Step 4: enjoy the company of a loving family. Step 5 (the final step) have a good drink of cheap liquor at the end of each day. (Note I generally avoid the fancy, expensive stuff).

*What one thing would you NEED to have on a deserted island if you didn't have to worry over food and water? * A fully functioning, solar-powered coffee maker with a limitless supply of ground coffee (again, the cheap stuff).

*If you were a king/queen for a day, what would you do?* Hide out at the lake until the day was all over.

*What song is in your head at the moment?*
    This one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NDuj-MyVyA

*Which book are you reading at the moment?*
Kinda between books: I just finished Summer World by Bernd Heinrich. It's non-fiction and a little science-y. Good stuff. Next on my list is Cakes and Ale -- Bean got me hooked on Maugham a while ago.

    *What is your favourite quote?*
"My greatest skill has been to want but little" Thoreau.

    *Favorite avatar on the Forum?*
Silas Thorne's -- that cane is wicked good!

    *Favorite threads?*
The one titled "nature writing" in the general literature area.

    What's your favorite sandwich?
Eeech! Not a real sandwich fan, to tell you the truth. Do hamburgers count?

*What time of day do you most often find yourself on the LitNet*? Evenings

*What are you wearing at the moment?*
Stained blue jeans, tee shirt, hooded sweatshirt, wool socks

    *Favorite poem?*
    "Intimations of Immortality" by Wordsworth

    *Favorite TV shows?*
    Northern Exposure. . .

*Which Forum members would you like to meet in person?* Lots of 'em. I'd like to chat with Scher and qimissung about teaching and such, JuniperWoolf about Alan Moore, Neely about brews and books, Silas Thorne about poetry and such, mtpsupur so I could get an education about old school comics, Paulclem, hack Gilliatt Gurgle, jersea. . . lots of others too.

    *Last person you hugged/kissed?*
One of the several chicks in my house. . . . can't remember which.

*What do you do (for a living) to be able to keep your LitNet addiction going? And are you happy with your chosen profession?*
    I'm a teacher. And yes.

*Would you rather be an educated fool or an ignorant fool?*
Oh and educated fool for sure. I've seen both, and while educated fools are annoying, ignorant fools are simply dangerous.

*What would you like to be if you could change your profession?* Oh the possibilities! Lingerie model photographer. . .professional bass fisherman. . . .NFL punter. . .so many to choose from.

*Which one of the seven dwarves are you and why?* Maybe doc. . .

*What is your most outstanding feature?*
Physical feature? Oh my hair; it's thick and wavy with a healthy sheen.

*If you could change one thing about the way you look, what would that be?* No comment.

    *Describe your ideal day, please.*
Wake up before sunrise, go for a short walk with my wife in the gloaming. Come home and have a warm cup of coffee, wake up the kids, go to work, come home early and make a nice meal and have a cheap beer (or two). Take the girls fishin'. Come home and read until I fall asleep.

    *Favorite movie?*
    Star Wars

    *Favorite painting?*
I like the Hudson River School a lot. Maybe Albert Bierstadt's "Yosemite Valley": http://www.history.vt.edu/Barrow/His...rrow/004*.jpeg

If you could relive one moment in your life whenever you wanted to, what would it be?
There was this one moment when I hopped across these rocks on this lake to this small island early in the morning, before work. I sat on that island and looked out at the lake and wrote in my journal. . . . there was something perfect about that. But I've had a lot of moments like that.

What was the best thing that happened to you during this year? I don't want to divulge the details. . .lest I be accused of boasting.

*Are you mostly happy with life or are you still in pursuit?*
    Hell, I'm happy.

Tell us something scandalous about yourself. Ha! Yeah, like I know any of you. Sheesh!

*One final word of wisdom for LitNet users?*
    The-hyphen-helps-you-get-around-the-rules

*What question would you like to ask to the person to be interview after you?
A most important one! "What's the biggest fish you've ever caught?"
    ~
"It is not that I am mad; it is only that my head is different from yours.”

    Happy Birthday!
"I should only believe in a God that would know how to dance. And when I saw my devil, I found him serious, thorough, profound, solemn: he was the spirit of gravity- through him all things fall. Not by wrath, but by laughter, do we slay. Come, let us slay the spirit of gravity!" - Nietzsche

    Happy birthday

"But do you really, seriously, Major Scobie," Dr. Sykes asked, "believe in hell?"
    "Oh, yes, I do."
    "In flames and torment?"
"Perhaps not quite that. They tell us it may be a permanent sense of loss."
"That sort of hell wouldn't worry me," Fellowes said.
"Perhaps you've never lost anything of importance," Scobie said.

The Comedian is a top fella - he's in tune with nature and common sense and has all the right values, in all the right places. He's got bags of wisdom and is honest and humble. He's also one of few people on earth who's happy and content. Just imagine this guy if he upped the quality of his beverages a little. Wooa, he'd be so good he would be scary!!!

    Yay, happy birthday, Comedian!
