    Oranges and Lemons ...

Why is this rhyme included in the novel? A link to the past? And why do Charrington, Julia and O'Brien all add a line to it?

I cant quite put my finger on it but when you read it, it sounds eery and hypnotic, and as Winston says you can almost hear the bells

That's why it's such a famous rhyme. The end line fits as well.

If the rhyme is a link to the past does that mean that they will use it to fight against big brother? Was the rhyme created wheneverything started to go downhill? Also, if Winston has never heard church bells ringing dosent that mean that government has eliminate religion? Since they have gotten rid of most- if not all of a persons rights, does that mean they are trying to end human existence?

Big Brother may be trying to wipe out human existence, but only in a metaphoric way. They aren't actually trying to kill off people just the humanity that comes with them. They are trying to make people who are dehumanized and that are completely loyal to Big Brother without question.

Keep reading, but I can tell you the rhyme is a traditional London one, much older than Orwell.
