Not all boozed up and nationalistic. Some of us just support our national team.

This I'm a bit confused on, and I'll confess to knowing little about football other than the very basics. I don't really understand the tournament ranking in the World Cup. The USA and England are tied for points, so why is it that the USA won the group???

I'm certainly not complaining since the USA advanced past this stage, which is pretty rare I believe, but I just don't get why they took the group or the implications of the tie between them.

I am so happy that Ghana is through!

And I am even happier that England will be playing against Germany. That should put an end to their misery

In that case they look at the number of goals each team scored, Meg.

The USA scored 5, I think, and England only 2 (and still managed to go through :-/)

I didn't -- I was so anxious I almost hid beneath the couch. Anyway, germany advances

I've just worked out that if we beat the German's I will completely miss the quarter final, probably against Argentina, nooooooo. I'll be in London at the opera instead. I blame the USA for that, if they hadn't have scored we would have played on Saturday instead and faced Ghana to boot! Damn you.

Edit: Also I'm still not happy about being held back credits, it's a conspiracy just so I can't win. Snowqueen, any spare change?

Overall though, I'm very pleased about today of course.

They have played so well! Germany and Argentina are the two teams that I am really impressed with this year.

Yes, yes... I am sure both teams will be delighted to hear that... And others will be devastated.

Ghana's play is far superior to England's.
    so I can't win.
Based onyour track record, you couldn't anyway.

It certainly does and I shall follow its advance with interest even though I don't much care for football. I like to see Germany do well in whatever contest they engage in.

I was sure England were going to win today despite the media frenzy after a poor performance against Algeria. You only have to look back at qualification to see how good they can be, and Don Fabio is clearly no mug with all his trophies and experience.

Gerrard still played on the left - and played well - and they still had the basic 4-4-2 that had been so heavily criticised. At least Don Fabio knows what he's doing - unless of course it was Mick's jinx prediction that did it.

It's very easy to get swept up in the disappointment and negativity caused by a blip. (I think it goes for all aspects the the news media turn their eye to). Daftness abounds.

Yeah, on the one hand I kind of understood Rooney on the field, getting kicked by his own fans, and saying "Thanks for nothing." On the other hand, it was an excruciating 90-minute blip.

Ok, I'm only betting on one game today and I'm betting big.

If they don't win today, they don't deserve to advance.

@Brian, I don't know if you are aware that the line you cited is forbidden in germany and I'd suggest you edit your post and remove it?
