See , I am not a fan of country music. Really - can't be doing with it. But The Wichita Lineman is not, actually, a country song. Those are not country chords, and that lyrical conceit is certainly not a country trope. It's practically metaphysical. As a writer, Jimmy Webb tended not to go for the easy or pat emotional option - but the arrangement in the Campbell version is deceptive, because it sort of leads you to believe you're listening to schmaltz.

On the other hand, the Righteous Brothers thing is absolutely, bang-on, money-in-the-bank pop cliché. Play it on a guitar - it's banal. The genius is all in the arrangement. 7.5/10

Here's another Jimmy Webb song, in an unusual interpretation.

Hang on - I'll find something.
I knew I liked it for a reason.

You just needed Mark to come along and tell you why, right?

Meanwhile, we are still waiting for Mark to post a song... I would probably give it a 4/10, anyway.

It takes me back to the sixties - I'm sure my Mum listened to it on the radio a lot.

    7/10

Also good for singing in pubs - not that I go much these days.
My dad had a this on an album of country music.

Yeah, my dad too. He used to sing it in the car. So - for our dads - 8/10.

But we skipped one. Here's another Jimmy Webb song, in an unusual interpretation. The brilliance of this lyric is not that he's leaving her. It's that he's quite obviously not leaving her. He's having one of those internal "you'll miss me when I'm gone" monologues that you have before you fall asleep next to the woman who has spent all night pissing you off.

I've found another one my dad liked. He was a bit of a scrapper and he liked this one. (His last scrap was in his late fifties! Against 3!)

    10/10 - Awesome.

Now, this is one of those bands where you either hate them or love them... Personally I think they're great.

P.S. It takes until about the one minute mark to get going.

The idea is that you rate the previous one before offering another. Pay attention.
